Red Spektor Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Daz- We formed in 2012 we knew each other previously from a former band and decided to form Red Spektor as we we’ve always got on like brothers.

John- this was to be organic and honest as we don’t strive for a particular genre it’s just the combination of our 3 sounds that makes Red Spektor

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

Rob - We have a classic sound which comes from a live and straight up approach to music, minimal production, few effects pedals, relying on the guitars, amps, the songs and each other to deliver a big sound, but in and amongst that is a psychedelic edge and a big bluesy tone.

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrics?

John - Each song is unique and has its own story. Torpedo Head is about the state of the political system at the previous UK elections and Pagan Queen is about an encounter with a White Witch.

Daz - That song was written and recorded within 2 hours and is one of our favourites.

4.Some of the lyrics have some pagan and occult themes to them, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

Rob - The occult is something I have always had a fascination with. I was always doing Ouija boards as a teenager and just found the whole symbolism of the early beliefs fascinating

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Red Spektor'?

Daz-Not very exciting really but Red Spektor came from a list of names we compiled. It’s a name that struck accord with us and we’ve loved ever since.

John-We’ve found out since that there is a comic book called Dr Spektor and Bon Scott’s first band were called The Spektors – which are both cool coincidences.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Daz-Pretty much every gig we play is a blast. Playing live is what we love best

Rob - We play gigs it like there’s no tomorrow. Stage performance is a wave of music, we don’t talk much and we just let the music take over.

Daz- it’s all about the energy which on stage just explodes and always makes for a good night.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Daz - We plan to do some tours following the official album launch 29th July

John- And we have a couple of killer gigs at Hard Rock Hell 10 on the 12th Nov and Hard Rock Hell Prog on the 17th March where we are on the same bill as Hawkwind, which is something very special

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of psychedelic and stoner rock?

Rob – Just awesome, the comments we get, emails from places such as Brazil, Russia, US, Italy, Canada, Australia, to name a few is just mind blowing. To get praise from the other side of the world is just humbling.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Rob – That’s a good question, I just don’t have a plan. Our songs come from jams in the studio and we are always jamming.

John- We don’t really go for a sound, preferring to grow organically, taking us where ever it decides to go.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Daz- We love Graveyard, Kadavar, Uncle acid and Deadbeats they’re just great bands and the like the greats such as early Black Sabbath, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Captain Beyond

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Rob - There’s a passion for biking particularly mountain biking, we were lucky to have the EP on 3 very cool Trek World Racing mountain bike videos. I also love cool vans and currently drive the Red Spektor wagon a Chevrolet Express van which is awesome to kick about to gigs in.

John – and I’ve always loved Graphic Design

Daz- John does all of our cool artwork

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

John – Just thanks to everyone who has supported the band on our journey so far.

Rob – it might be a cliché but it really does matter to us. There are so many cool people out there that have sent messages, said nice things about our music and it’s just awesome.
